Fun Ways to Enhance Your Preschooler's Math Skills

Posted on 05-22-2015 | Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy of West McKinney

Preschoolers are naturally inquisitive and are eager to learn about the world around them. Whether they’re at daycare, on a play date, spending some time at home or anywhere else, they’re always taking in their surroundings. Each day provides plenty of opportunities to learn and grow. As a parent or caregiver, it’s important to help young minds not only explore, but understand new knowledge. Math is just one example of a subject that can be learned through simple daily activities.

Take a look at these creative ways to enhance your preschooler’s math skills:

1.Organize Toys – Give your child the responsibility to organize toys in a particular manner. At first, do not give any specific instructions, just ask the child to organize. You may be surprised how your child groups things! After your child has grouped the toys, ask questions about how the toys were grouped. Then proceed to do variations of the task by asking the child to group the toys by size, color, shape etc. Your child can also count the toys in each container to remember how many toys are able to fit.

2.Guessing weights - Ask your child to guess which toy is the heaviest. Then, show your child how to use a scale to weigh the toys and see if the guess was correct.

3.Matching - Play a match game. Ask your children to choose 2 items in the house that weigh the same. Then place the items on the scale and see if the match is correct.

4.Looking for patterns – Ask your child to walk around your home and look for matching patterns, lines or shapes. See who can find the most patterns.

5.Do a puzzle together - Help your child organize the steps to complete the puzzle (place the end pieces together, place similar colors together, etc.).

6.Counting money - Purposefully leave change in your purse or pocket. Make an offer to your child to keep the change if he or she can tell you the exact amount of money you have.

7.Measuring food – Invite your child to help you prepare a dish. For example, tell your child, “Would you give me 3 strawberries, 1 egg, and 1 cup of milk, etc.”

Any activity that involves numbers, shapes, patterns, or structures can help with math skills. Even simple tasks can be beneficial!
