Language development in your child is about more than just learning to speak. It is key to teaching multiple skills including reading, social behaviors, communication, problem solving, creativity, self expression and vocabulary. Supporting language development is important at home as well as in child care facilities. Here are some great tips:

  • Continuously talk to your baby: Research has shown that consistent exposure to adult speech has a significantly positive impact on your child’s language development, boosting vocabulary and reading skills. It’s best to keep up a stream of one-sided chatter as you interact with your infant.
  • Engage with storybooks: Reading to your infant is a great way to encourage language development in a calm, relaxing setting. As your child gets older, encourage him or her to interact with the book by touching the pages, pointing to pictures, and asking about the story.
  • Learn infant sign language: Simple signs can be learned by your child from around seven months. You can make communication more effective by teaching your child the sign for “bottle” while saying the word out loud. When your child is able to say the word out loud, the signs can become a fun game for you to expand your child’s vocabulary even further.
  • Explore: Choosing a fun, safe environment for you and your child to explore gives him or her a great opportunity for practicing language skills. A visit to Towne Lake Recreational Area provides an opportunity for your child to point out trees, flowers, ducks, boats and more.
